The Great Depression: A Diary
Categories: Business & Money, History
Benjamin Roth, a young lawyer in Youngstown, Ohio, kept a private diary from the 1929 stock market crash through the late 1930s. His son and James Ledbetter edited it for publication in 2009. Roth records falling prices, bank failures, unemployment and the struggles of his clients and neighbors as they happened. He also reflects on investing, debt and saving, and on how hard it was to see when the slump would end.
