In Mark Greaney's first Gray Man novel, Court Gentry, a CIA-trained assassin working freelance, kills a Nigerian minister, the brother of the country's president, and a French corporation chasing a gas contract agrees to deliver Gentry's death in return. To force his handler, Sir Donald Fitzroy, to cooperate, the company holds Fitzroy's family captive at a château in Normandy. Gentry crosses Europe to reach them as twelve international kill teams close in. The 2022 Netflix film The Gray Man drew on the series.
