The Gay Science
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Gay Science (1882), also published as The Joyful Wisdom, is Friedrich Nietzsche's collection of aphorisms, reflections and poems, written just before Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In a lighter, more affirmative mood than much of his work, he takes on morality, art, science and religion. It contains the parable of the madman who announces that God is dead and first introduces the idea of eternal recurrence. Nietzsche added a fifth book and a closing set of poems in a second edition in 1887.
