The Frozen River (2023) is a historical mystery by Ariel Lawhon, inspired by the diary of Martha Ballard, a midwife in Hallowell, Maine, in the late eighteenth century. In the winter of 1789, a man is found frozen in the ice of the Kennebec River. Martha, whose work gives her access to homes and secrets across town, is called to examine the body, and her findings draw her into a case that powerful men in the community would rather ignore.
