The French Revolution: A History
Categories: History
The French Revolution: A History is Thomas Carlyle's dramatic three-volume account of the revolution in France, first published in 1837. Carlyle tells the story from the last years of Louis XVI through the storming of the Bastille and the Terror to the 'whiff of grapeshot' fired by the young Napoleon in 1795. Written in a vivid, present-tense style, the book brings to life figures such as Mirabeau, Danton and Robespierre.

- Mark Twain: “In my list I know I should put Shakspeare ; & Browning ; & Carlyle (French Revolution only)... I should be sure of these (Letter to Rev. C. D. Crane, Jan. 20, 1887)”
