The First Man in Rome

In the last years of the Roman Republic, two outsiders set out to rise in a city run by old families. Gaius Marius is a gifted soldier with no noble name, and Lucius Cornelius Sulla is a penniless patrician with a dangerous charm. Colleen McCullough opens her Masters of Rome series with their alliance, set against wars in Africa and a looming barbarian invasion. Her detailed research brings the Senate, the Forum and the legions vividly to life.

David Sacks: “Fall of the Roman Republic is one of my favorite historical periods. Highly recommend this series if you like (highly accurate) historical fiction.”
