The Divide: Global Inequality from Conquest to Free Markets
By Jason Hickel
Categories: Business & Money, Politics & Social Sciences
The Divide is economic anthropologist Jason Hickel's account of why the gap between rich and poor nations has grown rather than shrunk. Hickel challenges the standard story that aid and free markets are closing the gap. He traces global inequality back through colonialism and the slave trade to debt crises, structural adjustment, trade rules and tax havens. He argues that poverty is a political problem and proposes changes to the global economy aimed at real fairness.
