The Crossing is a 1994 novel by Cormac McCarthy and the second book of his Border Trilogy, between All the Pretty Horses and Cities of the Plain. It is set in New Mexico and Mexico. In the late 1930s, sixteen-year-old Billy Parham traps a pregnant she-wolf that has been killing cattle on his family's ranch and decides to return her to the mountains of Mexico. He makes three crossings into Mexico, each ending in loss, as he searches for meaning and for his lost brother.
