The Complete Works: Handbook, Discourses, and Fragments
By Epictetus
Categories: Religion & Spirituality
Robin Waterfield's 2022 translation collects everything that survives of Epictetus, the Stoic teacher born into slavery around AD 50 who, after being expelled from Rome, opened a school at Nicopolis in northwestern Greece. It contains the four books of Discourses recorded by his student Arrian, the Handbook in which Arrian distilled the teaching, and the fragments. Running through them all is the claim that some things are up to us and some are not. Waterfield supplies an introduction and full notes.
