Categories: Health, Fitness & Dieting, History
The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis is by Maria Smilios. The book follows the Black nurses, many of them from the American South, who worked at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island in the 1930s and 1940s, when white nurses refused the dangerous work. They cared for patients during the search for a cure and took part in trials of new drugs that changed the treatment of tuberculosis, despite racism and risk to their lives.
