The Accidental Guerrilla
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
In The Accidental Guerrilla (2009), counterinsurgency adviser David Kilcullen examines the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the wider conflict with al-Qaeda. Kilcullen argues that many fighters opposing Western forces are accidental guerrillas: local people who join insurgents because foreign intervention threatens their communities, rather than committed global jihadists. Drawing on his fieldwork in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Southeast Asia, he proposes strategies that separate global terrorists from local grievances.
