Surfaces and Essences: Analogy as the Fuel and Fire of Thinking

By Douglas Hofstadter, Emmanuel Sander

Categories: Science & Math

Cognitive scientists Douglas Hofstadter and Emmanuel Sander argue that analogy is the core of all thinking. They show how analogy-making shapes the words we choose, the categories we form, how we handle new situations and how great scientific discoveries are made, including Einstein's. Using many examples from everyday speech, mathematics and physics, the authors present a new view of human cognition.
