Stonehenge Decoded

By Gerald S. Hawkins

Categories: History, Science & Math

Astronomer Gerald S. Hawkins argues that Stonehenge was built as an observatory to track the Sun and Moon. Using a computer to analyze the alignments of the stones, Hawkins shows that many point to sunrise and moonrise at key times of the year, and suggests the monument could have been used to predict eclipses. Written with John B. White and first published in 1965, the book sparked debate about ancient astronomy.
