SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome
By Mary Beard
Categories: History
SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome is by Cambridge classicist Mary Beard, published in 2015. Beard covers about a thousand years of Roman history, from the city's legendary founding to 212 CE, when Emperor Caracalla granted citizenship to all free inhabitants of the empire. She looks at how Rome grew from a small settlement into a world power, and examines its politics, wars and ordinary lives, while questioning what historians can know about it.
