Shane (1949) is a western novel by Jack Schaefer, set in Wyoming in 1889 and narrated years later by Bob Starrett, who was a boy on his family's homestead at the time. A quiet stranger named Shane rides into the valley and takes work with Bob's father, Joe. The homesteaders are under pressure from a cattle rancher, Luke Fletcher, who wants their land for open range, and Shane is drawn into their struggle while trying to leave his own past behind.

- Ben Shapiro: “But Shane represents a reminder that the men and women who settled the land on which the vast majority of Americans currently live were, for all of their flaws, doing something heroic, facing the unknown in order to conquer and cultivate the West.”
