Shakespeare's Sonnets
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Published in 1609, Shakespeare's sequence of 154 sonnets traces the speaker's relationships with a young man of beauty and high standing and with a dark-haired woman often called the Dark Lady. A rival poet also appears. The early sonnets urge the young man to marry and have children; later ones turn to love, jealousy, desire, time and mortality. The identity of the volume's dedicatee, "Mr. W. H.," is disputed.
