Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland's Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World

Secrets of the Sprakkar is a 2022 book by Eliza Reid, the Canadian-born writer who was then the First Lady of Iceland, published by Sourcebooks. Its title uses an old Icelandic word for extraordinary women. Mixing reporting with memoir, Reid interviews Icelandic women from many walks of life, including politicians, artists, athletes and immigrants. She asks why Iceland has topped world rankings for gender equality and what it still gets wrong, and she suggests lessons that other countries could learn about building a fairer society.

Margaret Atwood: “And this one will surprise you, I hope. It's by Eliza Reid, Secrets of the Sprakkar. And what is it about? It's about life in Iceland. ... So is it possible to have a more equitable society? Yes, it says Iceland. Not that they don't have problems. It's not a utopia.”
