Second Place (2021) is a novel by Rachel Cusk, inspired by Mabel Dodge Luhan's memoir of hosting D. H. Lawrence in New Mexico. A woman known as M lives with her husband on a remote stretch of marshland and invites L, a painter whose work once affected her deeply, to stay in their guest house. His arrival, with a young female companion, unsettles the household, and the novel explores art, power and freedom.
