Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox, 1882-1940
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs
Borrowing his title from Machiavelli's advice that a ruler must be both lion and fox, James MacGregor Burns traces Franklin D. Roosevelt's political education at Hyde Park, Groton and Harvard, his years in Albany and Washington, his struggle with polio and his rise to the presidency. Burns concentrates on Roosevelt's first two terms: the New Deal, his coalition-building, the failed 1937 plan to enlarge the Supreme Court, the recession that followed and the 1940 campaign for a third term.
