Protagoras
By Plato
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
In Plato's Protagoras, Socrates and his young friend Hippocrates visit the house of the wealthy Callias, where the sophist Protagoras of Abdera is staying. Hippocrates hopes to study with him, and Socrates asks what exactly Protagoras teaches. Protagoras claims to teach civic virtue and defends the claim with a myth about the origins of human society. Socrates doubts that virtue can be taught and presses him on whether the virtues are one thing or many.
