Powering the Future: How We Will (Eventually) Solve the Energy Crisis and Fuel the Civilization of Tomorrow (2011) is Nobel physicist Robert B. Laughlin's look at energy after fossil fuels. Laughlin imagines a world about two centuries ahead in which nobody burns carbon from the ground, because it is banned or gone, and asks how people keep the lights on. Deliberately setting climate aside, he works through the physics and economics of nuclear power, wind, solar, biomass fuels and energy storage.

- Patrick Collison: “just before that, Powering the Future by Robert Laughlin, which was also pretty good.”
