Poetics is a treatise by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, written in the fourth century BC, on poetry and drama, especially tragedy. Aristotle defines tragedy as the imitation of a serious action that arouses pity and fear and brings about catharsis. He analyses its elements, including plot, character, thought and diction, and discusses reversal, recognition and the tragic flaw, as well as epic poetry.
