Phaedo
By Plato
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
Plato set this dialogue in the Athenian prison on the day Socrates was to drink hemlock, with the story told afterward by Phaedo of Elis. Surrounded by friends, Socrates explains why a philosopher should not fear death. He offers several arguments for the immortality of the soul, including the theory of recollection and an argument from the Forms, and answers objections from the Thebans Simmias and Cebes.
