Parmenides
By Plato
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
Plato imagined a meeting in Athens between a young Socrates and the aged philosophers Parmenides and Zeno of Elea. Socrates proposes the theory of Forms to answer Zeno's paradoxes, and Parmenides raises searching objections to it. Parmenides then demonstrates a method of philosophical training through a long, dense series of arguments about whether the One exists. Readers have taken the dialogue as a critique, a test or a defense of Plato's own theory.
