Parable of the Sower is a science fiction novel by Octavia E. Butler, first published in 1993. In 2024, Lauren Olamina, a teenager with hyperempathy, lives in a walled community near Los Angeles as society collapses from climate change, inequality and violence. When her home is destroyed, she travels north with other survivors and develops Earthseed, a new belief system built on the idea that God is change. The novel is the first in Butler's Parable series.
