Our Own Worst Enemy: The Assault from within on Modern Democracy
By Tom Nichols
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
Our Own Worst Enemy is a book by Tom Nichols, author of The Death of Expertise, about the threats to democracy that come from citizens themselves. Nichols argues that the danger to modern democracies comes less from foreign enemies or elites than from voters who have grown narcissistic, resentful and bored despite peace and prosperity. He examines populism, polarization and the decline of civic virtue, and makes the case that citizens must take responsibility for preserving liberal democracy.
