Othello
Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction
Shakespeare's tragedy, printed in 1622, follows Othello, a Moorish general serving Venice, who has secretly married Desdemona, a senator's daughter. Sent to defend Cyprus against the Turks, he takes along his ensign, Iago, who resents Michael Cassio's promotion over him. Iago sets out to destroy Othello by persuading him that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio, using a lost handkerchief as false proof. Shakespeare adapted the story from an Italian tale by Giraldi Cinthio.
