Janet Evanovich's first Stephanie Plum novel, published in 1994, introduces a heroine from the burg, a blue-collar pocket of Trenton, New Jersey. Jobless, broke and with her Miata repossessed, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin Vinnie into hiring her as an apprehension agent. With coaching from Ranger, a seasoned bounty hunter, she takes her first assignment: bringing in Joe Morelli, a former vice cop wanted for murder and the man who charmed her at sixteen. A brutal boxer, Benito Ramirez, adds danger.
