My Year of Rest and Relaxation (2018) is Ottessa Moshfegh's darkly comic novel about a young, wealthy New Yorker who decides to sleep through as much of a year as she can. Aided by an irresponsible psychiatrist and a cocktail of prescriptions, the unnamed Columbia graduate retreats to her Upper East Side apartment after her parents' deaths and a firing from a gallery job. Interrupted by her needy friend Reva and by sleepwalking episodes, the hibernation becomes a strange experiment in grief, boredom and self-erasure.
