Mirror Worlds: or the Day Software Puts the Universe in a Shoebox...How It Will Happen and What It Will Mean
Categories: Computers & Technology
Yale computer scientist David Gelernter predicted in 1991 that software would create detailed digital models of the real world, which he called mirror worlds. He describes how such systems would gather information from sensors and databases to show the state of cities, hospitals or companies in real time, and how people could explore them. The book foreshadowed the web, search and digital twins.

- Shane Parrish: “I got this recommendation from Marc Andreessen. Written in 1993, this lucid account of the software revolution foreshadows second life and the internet of things. Gelernter also elaborates on how software design can enable combinatorial creativity”
