Merde!: The Real French You Were Never Taught at School by Geneviève, illustrated by Michael Heath, is a humorous guide to everyday French slang, first published in 1984. It covers the argot, swear words, insults, come-ons and idioms that classroom lessons leave out, with notes on how and when they are used. Heath's cartoons illustrate the expressions, and the book is meant as a practical, irreverent companion for anyone who wants to understand French as it is actually spoken.
