Maria Lagana flees Fascist Italy for Los Angeles in the late 1930s after her father is sent into exile. By the early 1940s she is an associate producer at Mercury Pictures, a struggling Hollywood studio. As America enters World War II, Maria juggles studio politics, censorship, her family's secrets and a cast of fellow immigrants and exiles. Anthony Marra's novel moves between Hollywood and Italy, mixing comedy and tragedy in a story about the illusions people create.
