Losing the Long Game
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
In Losing the Long Game (2020), former White House coordinator for the Middle East Philip H. Gordon examines American attempts at regime change in the Middle East over seventy years. Gordon reviews cases including Iran in 1953, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Syria, arguing that the costs were always higher than expected, unintended consequences followed and results disappointed. Drawing on his experience in the Obama administration, he proposes an approach based on diplomacy, engagement, deterrence and support for allies.
