Lincoln Finds a General: A Military Study of the Civil War, Volume One

By Kenneth P. Williams

Categories: History

Indiana University professor Kenneth P. Williams's military history of the Civil War, first published in 1949, examines how Abraham Lincoln searched for a general capable of winning the war. This first volume follows the Union's eastern campaigns, including both battles of Bull Run, as Lincoln tests and replaces one commander after another. Williams, a veteran artillery officer, judges each general's decisions closely and argues that Lincoln understood military strategy better than many of the men he appointed. Numerous maps accompany the text.
