Light a Penny Candle is Maeve Binchy's first novel, about a lifelong friendship between an English girl and an Irish girl. During the London Blitz, young Elizabeth White is sent to a small Irish town to live with the boisterous O'Connor family, where she becomes close to Aisling. The book follows the two women over twenty years through love, marriage, disappointment and change in England and Ireland. It launched Binchy's career as a novelist.
