Last Summer on State Street (2022) is Toya Wolfe's debut novel, set in Chicago's Robert Taylor Homes public housing project in 1999, as the city prepares to demolish its towers. Twelve-year-old Felicia 'Fe Fe' Avery spends the summer jumping rope with her friends Precious, Stacia and Tonya. As gang violence, police and the coming demolition press in on their building, their friendships begin to fall apart, and Fe Fe looks back on that summer as an adult.
