Joe Hill
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Joe Hill is a 1950 novel by Wallace Stegner, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angle of Repose. It is a fictional account of the life of the Swedish-born labor activist and songwriter Joe Hill. Hill, an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World, was executed in Utah in 1915 for a murder many believed he did not commit. Stegner imagines his years drifting across the American West, his work with the union, and the trial that made him a martyr of the labor movement.
