Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World

By Joan Druett

Categories: History

In 1864 two ships were wrecked on opposite ends of Auckland Island, south of New Zealand, months apart, and neither crew knew the other was there. Joan Druett tells both stories. The five men of the Grafton, led by Captain Thomas Musgrave and the resourceful Frenchman François Raynal, built a cabin, a forge, tools and soap, and turned their dinghy into a boat for help. On the Invercauld, nineteen men reached shore under Captain George Dalgarno, but leadership crumbled amid starvation and cold.
