Categories: Politics & Social Sciences, Religion & Spirituality
Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty (2011) is a book by Turkish journalist Mustafa Akyol. Akyol traces debates within Islamic thought from the early schools of law through the Ottoman reform era to the present. He argues that Islam's own traditions contain resources for liberty, democracy and individual rights, and that extremism is a political choice rather than a religious destiny.

- Fareed Zakaria: “This week's book of the week is "Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty" by Turkish commentator Mustafa Akyol. Akyol argues that the Muslim world needs to embrace not only democracy, but also liberalism. It is really the best book about a modern interpretation of Islam you can find out there. It has an excellent epilogue on the Arab spring.”
