Indian Summer
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Indian Summer is William Dean Howells's 1886 novel about a middle-aged American who returns to Florence hoping to recapture his youth. Theodore Colville, a newspaper editor in his forties, goes back to Italy, where he once had a failed romance. There he meets Lina Bowen, an old friend, and Imogene Graham, a young woman who becomes infatuated with him. The novel explores love, age and the folly of trying to relive the past.

- Mark Twain: “I have just read Part II of Indian Summer, and to my mind there isn't a waste line in it... It is a beautiful story, and makes a body laugh all the time, and cry inside (Letter to W. D. Howells, Elmira, July 21, 1885; Mark Twain's Letters, ed. Paine)”
