In Susan Straight's novel, Serafina, a young Mexican Indian woman from Oaxaca, crosses illegally into southern California and lives with Larry Foley, a trucker. Seized by immigration officers, she cannot explain that her three-year-old daughter, Elvia, is asleep nearby, and is deported. Raised in foster homes until Larry reclaims her, Elvia is pregnant at fifteen when she sets out to find the mother she believes abandoned her, while Serafina makes the dangerous journey back across the border to look for her.
