Neuroscientist Carl Hart's memoir of growing up in one of Miami's toughest neighborhoods and his path through the Air Force to becoming a Columbia University professor who studies drug addiction. Drawing on his own life and research, he argues that much of the conventional wisdom about drugs is wrong and that US drug policy has done serious harm, especially to Black communities. It won the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award.
