Herodotus

By James Romm

Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History

Classicist James Romm's 1998 introduction, written for students and nonspecialists in Yale's Hermes Books series, argues that Herodotus was both an inquirer into the past and a master storyteller. Romm sets out the world the Histories describe, from the rise of Persia to the Persian invasions of Greece in 490 and 480 BC. He examines Herodotus's moral view of history, his fascination with distant peoples and places, his narrative art and the question of truth behind his tales. John Herington contributes a foreword.
