Sharon Kay Penman's 1985 historical novel, the first in her Welsh Princes trilogy, is set in thirteenth-century Wales and England. It tells the story of Llewelyn the Great, the prince who united much of Wales, and his marriage to Joanna, the illegitimate daughter of England's King John. Torn between her husband and her father as the two countries go to war, Joanna faces divided loyalties, political intrigue and great personal sacrifice.

- Hillary Clinton: “I've recently discovered the historical novels by Sharon K. Penman. I'm reading her series about King Henry and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Very interesting, not only well done, but really engrossing.”
