Henry VI, Part 1

By William Shakespeare

Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction

Opening at the funeral of Henry V, this history play, first published in 1623, follows English losses in France under the infant Henry VI. The English champion Lord Talbot fights French forces rallied by Joan la Pucelle, Joan of Arc. At home, a quarrel in the Temple Garden, marked by the plucking of white and red roses, foreshadows the Wars of the Roses. Many scholars think Shakespeare wrote the play with collaborators.
