Harriet the Spy (1964) is a children's novel by Louise Fitzhugh about an eleven-year-old girl in Manhattan who wants to be a writer. Harriet M. Welsch follows a daily spy route around her neighbourhood and writes down everything she observes about her neighbours, classmates and friends in a notebook, including her frank opinions of them. Her careful routine continues happily until the notebook falls into the wrong hands.
