Govt Cheese: A Memoir
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs
Before The Legend of Bagger Vance appeared in 1995, Steven Pressfield spent twenty-seven years pursuing a writing career, working at a string of jobs across the country while his manuscripts went unsold. In this memoir he tells the parts of that journey he usually leaves out: driving tractor-trailers, picking fruit as a migrant worker, laboring as an oilfield roustabout, copywriting and struggling as a Hollywood screenwriter, along with the guilt and self-doubt that shadowed what he calls his years in the wilderness.

- Ryan Holiday: “signed a bunch of copies of The War of Art, Turning Pro, Gates of Fire, A Man at Arms, and his memoir Government Cheese. If you haven't read any of those yet, what are you even doing with your life?”
