Goodbye, Darkness: A Memoir of the Pacific War
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
Goodbye, Darkness is William Manchester's 1980 memoir of fighting as a young Marine in the Pacific during World War II. Decades after the war, Manchester returned to the islands where he had served, from Guadalcanal and Tarawa to Okinawa, where he was badly wounded. He mixes his own memories with a history of the island campaigns, describing the fear, comradeship and horror of combat.
