Genghis Khan and the Quest for God: How the World's Greatest Conqueror Gave Us Religious Freedom
Categories: History, Religion & Spirituality
Anthropologist Jack Weatherford explores the religious life and beliefs of Genghis Khan and their influence on the empire he built. He shows how the conqueror, after studying Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and other faiths, came to guarantee religious freedom for the peoples of his empire. Weatherford argues that this tolerance helped hold the Mongol Empire together and later influenced the ideas of religious liberty adopted by thinkers such as Thomas Jefferson.
