Gandhi's Truth: On the Origins of Militant Nonviolence
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, Politics & Social Sciences
Psychoanalyst Erik H. Erikson's 1969 study examines Mohandas Gandhi's life and the origins of satyagraha, his method of militant nonviolence. Erikson centers the book on the 1918 Ahmedabad textile strike, in which Gandhi first used a fast to support workers, and draws on interviews with surviving participants. Combining psychology and history, Erikson explores Gandhi's childhood, relationships and inner conflicts, and includes a personal letter to Gandhi questioning aspects of his conduct.
